With the Equestrian eventing season well under way, Sydnie, one of our team, made her way to Chilham Castle to compete in the British Eventing 80 class last Saturday. You have to be a morning person if you want to own horses or compete as they don’t tend to have lie ins. Starting with packing the horsebox, plaiting, and cleaning the horse, we were well on our way by late morning. This particular event consists of three disciplines in one day. Firstly starting with the dressage, then onto show jumping to then finishing the day with the best part according to Sydnie, cross country.
Chilham Castle, Canterbury, was once the home of Henry VIII. Sydnie and her horses have been competing here for the past 6 years, so the venue is very well known to her. Chilham Castle is a magnificent grade 1 listed property. The house sits on 300 acres of stunning terraced lawns and unrivalled views over the parkland and lake. British Eventing have held their competitions there for many years, but the castle has gone up for sale for a whopping £15 million pounds. This means this could be our final season competing here. Unfortunately, Saffron are not able to offer Sydnie a loan of this size so she will not be making this purchase in the near future.
Sydnie’s horse, Kilcoltrim Moana (Moana) is a 16.1hh Irish sports horse, mare. She has owned her for just over two years. With Chilham being their third event of the season so far, they started the day off with a respectable dressage score of 33.8 leaving them in 4th place. Then they went on to jump a positive show jumping round with just one unlucky pole. There was then a very quick turn around to make it down to the cross country in time, coming home through the finish line with some time penalties for going too fast. This left us in 14th place for the day overall. Sydnie said it was great to be out again and this was a great opportunity to show off all her Saffron Financial riding gear.
